Kanu o ka ‘Āina New Century Public Charter School Project Case Study
Project Overview
Cabreros Contracting is proud to have contributed to the development of two new buildings, Hālau Poki‘i and Hālau Puke, for Kanu o ka ‘Āina (KANU) New Century Public Charter School in Waimea, Hawaii. This project, in collaboration with Kanu o ka ‘Āina Learning ´Ohana (KALO), marks a significant milestone in supporting culture-based education and the community.
The completion of these buildings, celebrated on September 4, brought together dignitaries, including U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka, and the entire school community. These new facilities embody the spirit of togetherness and cultural preservation that KANU champions.
Project Scope and Services
Cabreros Contracting provided a range of construction services to bring this project to fruition, including:
- Commercial Construction: Building two state-of-the-art educational facilities.
- ADA Compliance: Ensuring all structures are accessible to everyone.
- Concrete and Drywall Work: High-quality installation across various parts of the buildings.
- Interior and Exterior Remodeling: Creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces.

- Flooring Removal and Installation: Installing durable flooring suitable for educational environments.
Key Features of the New Buildings
- Hālau Poki‘i:
- Houses preschool classrooms through grade 5.
- The private preschool, Malamapokii, is operated by KALO and supported by Kamehameha Schools.
- Facilitates a seamless early education transition as part of the public-private partnership between KALO and KANU.
- Hālau Puke:
- Contains a native library for school and community use, supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
- Includes classrooms for grades 6 through 12.
- Outdoor Learning Labs:
- Two off-site outdoor learning labs at Pu‘upulehu and Waipi‘o expand learning opportunities beyond the traditional classroom setting.
- Hālau Ho‘olako:
- Serves as a community resource and technology center since 2009.
- Occupies a site on Department of Hawaiian Homes Land (DHHL).
Challenges and Solutions
- Cultural Integration:
- Challenge: Integrating Hawaiian culture and language into the curriculum while adhering to modern educational standards.
- Solution: Collaborative design and construction processes that respect and incorporate cultural elements, ensuring the buildings support KANU’s project-based and place-based learning approach.
- Community Involvement:
- Challenge: Coordinating with various stakeholders and community partners.
- Solution: Regular engagement and communication with DHHL, USDA, Kamehameha Schools, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and other partners to align on project goals and milestones.
- Funding and Resources:
- Challenge: Charter schools do not receive funding, necessitating community support and partnerships.
- Solution: Leveraging resources and support from KALO, community partners, and local organizations to complete the project successfully.
Outcomes and Benefits
The new buildings at Kanu o ka ‘Āina have brought significant benefits to the school and the wider community:
- Enhanced Educational Facilities: The new classrooms and learning spaces support a comprehensive K-12 education, fostering academic and cultural growth.
- Community Resource: Hālau Puke’s native library and Hālau Ho‘olako’s technology center serve as vital community resources, promoting lifelong learning.
- Cultural Preservation: The integration of Hawaiian culture, language, and traditions in the curriculum strengthens cultural identity and pride among students.
- Increased Capacity: The new buildings allow KANU to accommodate all its students at Kauhale ‘Ōiwi O Pu‘ukapu, promoting a cohesive learning environment.

Future Plans
Despite the significant progress, KANU still has future needs, including a cafeteria and additional high school classrooms. KALO and its community partners remain committed to continuing their efforts to support and perpetuate Hawaiian culture through education.
